Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday took to Twitter to pay tribute to revolutionary freedom fighters Bal Gangadhar Tilak and Chandra Shekhar Azad on their birth anniversary.

1. Bal Gangadhar Tilak, popularly known as Lokmanya was born into a Brahmin family on July 23, 1856 in Ratnagiri [Maharashtra] and passed away on August 1, 1920, Bombay [now Mumbai].
2. Tilak was a scholar, mathematician, philosopher, social reformer along with a nationalist who had helped in laying foundation for India’s Independence. In 1916, he founded the Indian Home Rule League.
3. Also, he was instrumental in formulating the Lucknow Pact with Mohammed Ali Jinnah that for Hindu-Muslim unity in the nationalist struggle.
4. Later, he founded the Deccan Education Society in 1884 to impart quality education to India’s youth.
5. Tilak was arrested on charges of sedition in 1906 was sentenced to six years of imprisonment in Mandalay (Burma). While his words “Swaraj is my birthright, and I shall have it!” continue to inspire us.

1. Born on July 23, 1906 in a village in Alirajpur, Madhya Pradesh, Azad was a mentor to many revolutionaries including Bhagat Singh.
2. At the small age of 15, he was caught by the British police for involving in revolutionary activities and was further sentenced to 15 whiplashes.
3. In 1921, when Mahatma Gandhi launched the non-cooeration movement. Also, he had actively participated in revolutionary activities.
4. In 1925, he was involved in the Kakori train robbery of 1925 and had even tried to blow up the Viceroy’s train in 1926.
5. According to sources, he had pledged never to be caught alive and On February 27, 1931, he shot himself dead with his last bullet after a shootout with police at Allahabad’s Alfred Park.
