Intercontinental Cup 2018, India Vs Kenya: No Messi, No Ronaldo, Meet The New Football Star Sunil Chhetri

Take A Bow! Sunil Chhetri, After crushing Chinese Taipei 5-0 in the 1st match of 2018 Hero Intercontinental Cup at Mumbai Football Arena, Mumbai, the Indian Football team were on a high as they registered their 2nd win of the tournament over Kenya on Monday.

After a poor attendance of 2,569 for the first match of the tournament, the Indian captain uploaded a video on his Twitter account and requesting the country’s audience to attend Blue Tigers matches. Well, His request did magic as around 8,890 came to watch the 3rd match of the tournament.

Further, the thunderous outpour of rain had made things tough for both the teams as they were playing on a wet surface in the opening minutes with no players from both sides ever dared to take the risk of attacking.

While a freekick for India went directly into the gloves of the Kenyan custodian. While the Kenya footballers were unable to create a clear scoring opportunity.

In the 22nd minute, Sunil decided to make a full use of the opportunity to put India ahead. 3 minutes later, Gurpreet Singh Sandhu and Udanta Singh turned out to be the biggest threats for Kenya.

At half-time, both the teams were standing on a level with the scoreline 0-0

In the 49th minute, Kenya’s Ovella Ochieng gave India a scare but could only shoot inches wide of the goal. In the 55th minute, India had a great opportunity to take the lead but Sunil failed to make a proper connection.

Chhetri’s penalty strike in the 68th minute along with Jeje Lalpekhlua’s 71st-minute strike boosted India. While we saw another goal from the Sunil as he chipped the ball over the head of the Kenyan keeper to lead India to a 3-0 win over Kenya in a tough contest. After scoring a hattrick in 1st match, we were happy to see Chhetri scoring his 2nd goal against Kenya to score his 61st goal in International football.

Sunil Chhetri who is considered one of the greatest footballers of India was playing his 100th international match on Monday. Well, the 33-year-old Indian footballer broke David Villa’s record of 59 goals as he scored 2 goals against Kenya to take his tally to 61 goals.

Surprisingly, the Secunderabad-born footballer is just behind the Portugues star Ronaldo who has 81 goals while  FC Barcelona superstar Lionel Messi is on 2nd with 64 goals.

Wow! This is incredible by Sunil as he is the 3rd highest goal scorer among currently active players right now.

As Chhetri has the best goals per match ratio with 0.61 among the leading international goalscorers. While Ronaldo’s goal per match ratio is 0.54, Messi scores with a rate of 0.52.

As he has already scored five goals in his last two games it will be interesting to see whether he can surpass Messi in his upcoming matches.

Well, we don’t need a Messi or Ronaldo, we have Sunil Chetri

We now hope for the best for Chhetri and Co. as they face New Zealand on Thursday.
