Rima Das’s Village Rockstars Edges Out Films Like PadMan And Padmaavat, Becomes India’s Offical Entry For Oscars

It is one of those glorious moments in the life of Rima Das who had made her debut with Man with the Binoculars: Antardrishti in 2016. Well, the self-taught filmmaker’s Assamese film Village Rockstars is India’s official selection for the 91st Academy Award in the Foreign Language Film category for Oscars 2019.

According to reports, the movie was competing with Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s mega-hit Padmaavat, Ranvir Shorey starrer Halka, Alia Bhatt’s Raazi and Sohum Shah’s upcoming movie ‘Tumbbad’.

Meanwhile, it is interesting to note that ‘Village Rockstars‘ had bagged the Best Feature, besides winning Film trophy at the 65th National Film Awards, Best Editing and Best Location Sound Recordist.

Well, the coming-of-age movie written, edited, co-produced, and directed by Rima Das is scheduled for a for a big release on September 28, 2018.

Last year, the Rajkummar Rao starrer ‘Newton’ became the part of official selection but couldn’t make the cut to earn a nomination in the Foreign Language Film category.

Meanwhile, this year, there were 28 movies which took part for the top spot, which includes R Balki’s ‘Padman’ starring Akshay Kumar, Dipesh Jain’s ‘Gali Guleiyan’ starring Manoj Bajpayee, Shoojit Sircar’s ‘October’ starring Varun Dhawan, 102 Not Out, Love Sonia and Pihu.
While the regional films included Tamil film ‘To Let’ and ‘Kolamavu Kokila’, ‘Mahanati’ and Marathi film ‘Nude’, ‘Bogda’ who had won several National and international awards.

Expressing her joy to indianexpress.com, Rima Das said, “Thank you thank you thank you!” She further said, “Of course, I couldn’t say anything then but today has to be the happiest day of my life.”

“I just happened to be home — and what timing to receive this news. Right now I’m celebrating with my family, friends and the cast,” Rima added.

Well, it seems that Rima has been waiting for this day all her life.
