Ghoul Review: Netflix’s Desi Action Series Starring Radhika Apte Is A Creepy, Potent Commentary On Anti-nationalism

Netflix’s latest Indian action horror web television miniseries Ghoul is all set to unleash some of the bravest filmmaking which you have never seen.

Ghoul
Cast – Radhika Apte, Manav Kaul
Rating – 3.5/5

Even though the opening title card is all sorts of provocative, it informs the viewer that the show is set in the near future and in a country which has been destroyed and divided by sectarianism.

Books are anti-national and anyone who dares to raise questions is considered a traitor. Further, bombs and beef are at par when it comes to contraband and the country belongs to a majority community.

Meanwhile,  opposition leaders, students or anyone who raises questions rules are taken in until they nod their head agreeing with the establishment. If they don’t agree, they are not going to survive which is a harsh reality in today’s world.

Let’s talk about our central character Nida Rahim (Radhika Apte) who desperately seeks social approval as well as considers her religion a crutch. Well, she will never hesitate in getting her father arrested.

Well, Nida is posted at Meghdoot 31, the covert detention center where the story of Ghoul starts. Further, the detention center has a mysterious energy, which makes the hair at the back of your neck stand up. Nida’s interactions with her new team members make us feel that there is something strange and though she is a smart woman who is good at her job, she doesn’t know how to read a room. Well, it is her need to seek approval which takes over.

As we all know that Ghoul is a horror drama, the show easily tackles social change in a dramatic and effective way. As we all see Apte’s Nida being discriminated against right from the start,  the drama highlights the issue, even more, when Manav Kaul’s Dacunha, a Christian character, gets sidelined by his Hindu subordinates. While the religious complexity might get misunderstood, director and writer Patrick Graham has done everything to share the idea of the sensitive subject.

Though Ghoul does leave us with a few questions regarding the plot yet one must not ask questions while watching a horror series. It is often considered that love is blind but when that blind love for the country is taken advantage of by powerful authorities, one must know how to distinguish between the two.

Well, Ghoul leaves you pondering over this questions and makes us realize if this is the reality we all are heading towards.
