Kalpana Chawla was the first woman from India to reach space. She is an inspiration for India’s youth and women who desire to chase their passion.

Kalpana Chawla was an American Astronaut and first woman from Indian origin who was among the seven crew members who lost her life in Space Shuttle Columbia Disaster on February 1, 2003.

On her 15th Death anniversary, let’s know some interesting facts about the brave hearted woman;

  • Kalpana was never a school topper but one of the brilliant students in her class.
  • She completed her schooling from Punjab. While after finishing her initial education she decided to get a degree in aeronautical engineering from Punjab engineering college in Chandigarh. Furthermore, she decided to move on to the US for her further studies.
  • From her background, one may perceive her as a nerd but this is not the truth as the Punjab girl was keenly interested in reading poetry and fiction.
  • Her parents fondly called her as Monto as a kid.
  • She believed in her dreams and had the courage to follow them. Though she belonged to a small town yet she managed to achieve her dreams.
  • After finishing her phd she worked at several positions at NASA before becoming an astronaut.
  • Kalpana’s first flight was in 1997 on Space Shuttle Columbia as a primary robotic arm operator and a mission specialist.

Kalpana Chawla was a strong girl who decided to chase her passion. Moreover, she worked hard, believed in herself and had the patience to walk a different path which led to her success.
