India’s Golden Day at Commonwealth

From Manipuri weightlifter Chanu Saikhom Mirabai to Ace Indian badminton player Saina Nehwal, Indian athletes stellar performance at the Commonwealth Games 2018 in Gold Coast saw India move at 3rd spot with 10 Gold, 4 Silver & 5 Bronze Medals taking the medal tally to 19 at the end of Day 5.

The latest special performance was of none other than pistol shooter Jitu Rai who won the gold medal in men’s 10m air pistol creating a new Commonwealth Games record.

Meanwhile, Jitu Rai looked impressive when he kept on shooting 10s continuously to take a big lead while maintaining an upper hand to clinch gold with a score of 235.1 leaving Kerry Bell on the second spot with a score of 233.5.

Rai who had won a gold medal in 50m air pistol event around four years ago in Glasgow shot a total of 235.1 to qualify for the final in the 5th position.

India’s Sharath Kamal, Sathiyan Gnanasekaran, and Harmeet Desai teamed up to win the men’s table tennis with a 3-0 win over Nigeria in the final on Monday to gift India another gold medal.

While In the first encounter, Achanta Sharath Kamal beat Bode Abiodun 4-11, 11-5, 11-4, 11-9 to provide  India a 1-0 lead in the finals.

Sathiyan Gnanasekaran ensured to live up to the expectations of the team with a  10-12, 11-3, 11-3, 11-4 victory over Segun Toriola.

Finally, Gnanasekaran then joined hands with Harmeet Desai to defeat Abiodun and Olajide Omotayo 11-8, 11-5, 11-3 to let India march towards victory.

Meanwhile recently India’s mixed badminton team beat Malaysia 3-1 in the final to win the third gold medal of the day.

In the mixed doubles category, the pair of Ashwini Ponnappa-Satwik Rankireddy bet Peng Soon Chan and Liu Yong Goh   21-14, 15-21, 21-15, to provide India with a 1-0 lead.

Thereafter, came Kidambi Srikanth who bet Olympic silver medallist Lee Chong Wei 21-17, 21-14.

While Malaysia fought back when Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty lost to Goh and Wee Kiong Tan 15-21 20-22 in men’s doubles

Further, Saina Nehwal had a tough fight with Soniia Cheah which provided India the topmost position win  21-9. in the final to ultimately win gold.

While the women pair Sikki Reddy and Ashwini were not required to play the last clash as India had already won the final match with a 3-1 lead.
