Jungle jungle pata chala hai.. Chaddi pehan ke phool khila hai….”, Do you know that the lovely lyrics were penned by legendary Gulzar? Well, the popular song always comes to our mind when someone talks about Mowgli, the favourite cartoon character of all the 90’s kids.

Sampooran Singh Kalra, popularly known as Gulzar, knows the art of carving words into poems and songs. Well, his works have not only inspired people during the 60s and 70s but also today’s young generation.

On his 84th birthday, let’s take a look at these 5 soulful songs that no one knew were written by Gulzar saab and will fill your heart with nostalgia:

1. Chaiyya Chaiyya- Dil Se

While Shah Rukh Khan and Malaika Arora iconic train sequence song, “Chaiyya Chaiyya” had made the whole nation crazy during the late 90s and early 2000s. The song was sung by Sukhwinder Singh but very few know that the lyrics were penned by Gulzar.

2. Ibn-E-Batuta- Ishqiya

Gulzar surprised everyone with the song, “Ibn-E-Batuta” which is named after the Moroccan scholar. One would think why the scholar’s name is used as the title of the song, the reason is the name rhymes well with the word “joota”. Indeed, the song is catchy and was one of the popular songs of the year.

3. Tujhse Naraz Nahin Zindagi- Masoom

The lyrics as well as the song, ”Tujhse Naraaz Nahi Zindagi” is so beautiful. Further, it shares a message about life, and the pain and sufferings one has to go through to make it worthwhile. The songs also gives a wonderful lesson about taking life as it comes and not regret any moment.

4. Beedi- Omkara

Do you thought Gulzar can only do soulful compositions? You must have definitely heard, “Beedi” song where Gulzar saab had his share of subtle naughtiness. In Bollywood, only Gulzar knows how to make poetry even out of double-meaning lyrics.

5. Tere Bina- Guru

The song, “Tere Bina” featuring Abhishek Bachchan and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan is so sweet that it touches the heart. The song was composed by A. R. Rahman while the lyrics were written by Gulzar and song went on to become one of the popular songs of 2006.

We are proud to know that Gulzar, even at this age, still prefers to spend time with his work and is contributing towards Bollywood.
